Who Doesn’t Want Us To Know the Truth?
Oct. 10, 2000 -- UPDATE
We felt that the Time EarthDay Special was one of the most amazing documents that has ever been written on the subject of the earth's environment. The article below reflects our attempt to reproduce or at least provide a link to this revealing and valuable information. Now, at last, Time magazine has found the resources to make the EarthDay Special available to us online. You may read it all. And we hope that you will. [--ed.]
Time EarthDay Special
We at Spirit of Ma'at have had a somewhat strange experience we need to relate to you. It concerns Time magazine's EarthDay Special Edition (Vol. 155 No. 17), mentioned in the previous article ("How Much Time Do We Have?").
We had hoped to link this environmental issue of our magazine to the EarthDay Special at Time's website, because it contained all the proof we could ever hope to find that our current efforts to heal the environmental situation are catastrophically inadequate. Since United States policy has always seemed to us to have been geared toward convincing the American people that there's nothing wrong, the publication of such a strong statement by one of our premier news publications sounded a hopeful note.
So quite naturally, we tried to find the magazine in Time's website archives. It was not there. Not a single article! You cannot read it there, and you cannot order copies. We tried that, too. And, quite soon after the publication came out, one of our staff members, traveling in six different states, was unable, despite persistent efforts, to find a newsstand copy of it.
To all intents and purposes the EarthDay Special seems to have completely disappeared.
Further, Time has placed a satirical article from the Onion magazine (see Onion article) on its website, explaining that hundreds of thousands of unread copies of the EarthDay Special were taken to a landfill. Although this article is entirely untrue (really, not one word is true), a link to this article is now the only thing that remains of the EarthDay Special. NOTE: As of our publication date, that, too is gone. But you can still read it at the Onion (see link above).
What is going on here? The Time EarthDay special was one of the most powerful environment statements ever made. So we must ask the question, Who does not want this information to go out to the world?
