The Spiral Journey

As I sit here ready to begin writing, almost two months since I returned from Mayaland, the vibration of this sacred journey still resonates within my heart. The Southwest Pilgrimage had been breathtaking, as we participated in the intimate involvement between the ancient Anasazi, Mother Earth, and our tiny group of brave souls who lived as One Spirit. The trip to the Mayan Chakra Temples was even more breathtaking, with experiences that will never be forgotten.

David Leonard,
LionFireWith us in the Yucatàn was LionFire, the shaman of Hovenweep who had been so important to us on our Four Corners Journey. He and his wife, Mary, remain as custodians of the Medicine Wheel we built then, but LionFire also spends much of his time among the Mayans of the Yucatàn. His contacts, knowledge, and power proved an important ingredient in our journey.

There were several others on the Mayaland journey who had been with us in the Southwest.

The Timing and Purpose of Our Journey

The timing of our trip to the Yucatàn coincided with an invitation by the Mayan shaman Hunbatz Men for us to participate in the Equinox ceremonies at Chichen Itza on the 20th of March. Hunbatz, the Mayan Council of Elders, and about 250 indigenous elders from the North, South, and Central Americas would perform ceremony for peace, joining their spiritual powers together for a world healing. Our own group would support this endeavor by performing ceremony in an outer circle around the inner core of shamans and elders.

Knowing many of their individual tribal spiritual understandings, I felt this was a meeting of elders that my group would choose to align with. At Chichen Itza, we also would be joined by a European group led by Carolina Hehenkamp (who was with us on the Southwest Pilgrimage).

Then, after the ceremonies at Chichen Itza, we would continue on a spiral journey to fulfill our own group's true purpose in going to Mayaland. And, very much as in the Southwest Pilgrimage, our purpose here would be to assist the ancient Mayans, who were now in the Inner Earth, to find balance.

Healing the Inner and Outer Mayan Worlds

Just as it was in the Four Corners, the Mayaland healing would mean restoring the balance of nature between the Inner and Outer Worlds. By so doing, the Inner Worlds could begin to move with us in harmony — or, better yet, we would move in harmony with them.

And this needed to happen soon. For — if you believe the present-day version — the Mayan calendar ends in a little more than nine short years (scientists who have studied the facts of history and the counting of time feel it may end even sooner than that). In the tradition of the Mayans, this period we are in now will usher in a moment in history called the "End of Time": the ending of a long cycle, and the beginning of a new one.

So our job would be to open the channels for the Mayans in the Inner Earth to connect with those on the surface in preparation for the final Ascension.

Also, just as it was in the Four Corners last summer, the Yucatàn and surrounding areas had been in a terrible drought. So another part of our job would be to perform the ceremonies that would bring rain: the physical symbol of the balance we were seeking.

Why would this ancient culture want a group of international people to do this kind of service for them? Have they forgotten how? Have they, for some reason, lost the spiritual power to do it themselves? I don't really know. It reminds me of how I was asked by the Taos Pueblo in New Mexico to bury their dead. They believed that it was better for them if another culture did this task. Yet is still seems strange that they would give such a personal task to someone of another race.

Perhaps the Mayans need an outside force to open the energy channels. Or perhaps, as with all of us, they have simply become overwhelmed by circumstances and need help.

For whatever reason, we were invited by the Mayans, both the living ones and the ancients, to come to Mexico and perform these ceremonies with them and for them. We could not say no.

Coming Together in Merida

We had originally planned to leave for Merida, our first stop in the Yucatàn, on the 18th of March. But because President Bush had given the UN until exactly March 18 before he would unilaterally declare war, I decided our staff could not take the chance that he would call Code Red and the US boarders would be sealed. So we changed our tickets to leave on the 17th, the day before the trip was scheduled to begin.

In the end, it didn't matter, as the war began later. But these are times of great change, so we went prepared.

I felt the heartbeat begin as soon as we touched Mexican soil. I had a strong sense of a connection between this and the Four Corners journey. It was the same energy, as though it had already been dreamed. I felt that this new trip to the Mayan Chakra Temples would be even more affecting, but I just didn't know how. Who but God, and perhaps the Ancient Ones, knew what was about to take place? I was going into the Unknown.

Upon arrival at the circular city of Merida we were swished away to the Hotel Los Aluxes — which means "the Little People" and is pronounced "a-LOOSH-as" — where we found that LionFire and Carolina had already arrived. For the next 24 hours, our vagabond group of 60 slowly came together from all over the world.

A Mayan Welcome

For our first get-together, on the 18th, LionFire had arranged a special evening for us with his Mayan friends.

We met in a little room at the hotel, where a Mayan elder — a beautiful grandmother — stood before us and, in the Mayan language, gave us her own permission to participate in ceremonies and visit places that in the past had been reserved for the Mayan priests. We felt incredibly honored by her words. There were many tears.

Then a Mayan musical group called Wayak played for us their haunting music, with throaty cries and native instruments that seemed like voices from an ancient past. It was like nothing we'd ever heard before. The enchantment of that evening was the perfect beginning to a pilgrimage of ceremonies that would hopefully bring health and balance back to the Mayan people and their land, preparing them for vastly important ceremonies in the future — ceremonies that the whole world will someday depend upon.

If the Equinox celebration determined the timing of this trip, and creating balance was its purpose, the actual form of our journey — a spiral — was set in 1985. And so now, in order to make sense of this present journey, I must take time aside to begin to explain this first trip I made into the Mayan world.

My Journey to Mayaland in 1985

Balancing the Unity Consciousness Grid

The spiral arrangement of the temples we were to visit last March was based upon information given to me by Thoth in 1984. And the ceremonies we would perform would represent the completion of an earlier journey.

It was in 1984 that I was asked by Thoth to go to eight specific sacred sites in Mexico and Guatemala, there to place eight specific, programmed crystals. He said that this was needed in order to balance the energies of the Female part of the Unity Consciousness Grid that surrounds the Earth — the Grid within which the whole world will someday become One.

Thoth said there was an imbalance in the Female part of the Unity Consciousness Grid, and that it must be balanced. He taught me that there was a Male part of this grid in Egypt and a Child part in Tibet, but that the Female part, in Mayaland, was experiencing most of the pain of the problems that the world was creating. In her heart, if the imbalance was not corrected, this Female part would become so depressed that she would rather die than remain upon the Earth. That would destroy the Trinity. And if the Trinity were lost, then all would be lost.

Thoth said that, long ago, he went from Egypt to Peru in his Silver Ship to begin the ceremony of the birth of a new race, the Incas. To us they are ancient, but to him they are like his children, and the life-force energy and knowledge of these children, the Inca, reaches all the way up into the Yucatàn. The Maya and the Inca are parts of a greater whole.

Then Thoth spoke to me about the Mayans and their original relationship to Atlantis — how they possessed the special knowledge that would be essential for us to have during the End of Time. Without knowing both the timing and the way of living at this specific moment in history, Thoth said, one would perish into the "the possibilities." And the Female needed to be balanced so that her strength would become as Light to the Male and the Child.

Another primary purpose of this journey would be to help the Mayans remember, and strengthen their connection to their ancestors.

Thoth was my teacher, one of the elders of the Ascended Masters. I trusted him. And I knew that, besides its effect upon the Grid, this journey into the Mayan jungle would be a teaching for myself, one of infinite value. I looked forward to it with great excitement.

Preparing for the 1985 Journey

Leading me in alchemy, Thoth told me to buy certain special crystals. Each one was to be about two inches long and of very high quality.

After I obtained these crystals and showed them to him, I truly expected Thoth to explain which temples each one would go to. Instead, he told me to go to my friend Katrina Raphael, who would tell me precisely which temple went with which crystal. Once I had this information from Katrina, Thoth said, he would tell me exactly where the crystals were to be placed. (Why he did it this way, I have no idea.)

On the day I went to Katrina's house, she was finishing her first manuscript for a book called Crystal Enlightenment (which later became a best seller in the United States), and that very afternoon happened to be her deadline for getting the manuscript to her publisher. She was running out of time. But Thoth had given me the same deadline.

Katrina was so busy that when she answered the door she just looked at me and said, "Go away. Tomorrow. Anytime, but not now."

But I needed to know "now," so I persisted, and eventually, with extreme reluctance, she agreed to give me a few minutes.

I related my story, explaining that she was supposed to tell me which temple went with which crystal, and gave her the eight crystals and the list of temples. Hurriedly, in an offhand manner and seemingly without thought, she matched each crystal with a temple, said she had to go, and walked away, returning to her manuscript!

I carefully wrote down which crystal went with which temple, and returned home to Thoth. He then told me where to place each crystal at the first four temples. At the last four, he said, I must find the correct spot using my own abilities.

Here are the temples Thoth asked me to visit in 1985, together with their order and their relationship to the human chakras or energy centers.

  1. Uxmal, Base Chakra (pron. Oosh-mahl)

  2. Labna, Sexual Chakra

  3. Kabah, Ego Center

  4. Chichen Itza, Heart Chakra

  5. Tulum, Throat Chakra

  6. Kahonlich, Third Eye (Pituitary Gland)

  7. Palenque, Pineal Gland

  8. Tikal, Crown Chakra

The actual list of crystals related to each of these temples has mostly been forgotten. It's not important for this story, but wherever I remember, I will tell you. Also, many other temples and locations were added to our present-day journey, and I will speak of them as the story unfolds. But it was at these specific temples that our special ceremonies were performed, both in 1985 and in 2003. The present-day ceremonies represented a completion of my earlier task.

So, in 1985, I made my traveling plans and began to prepare spiritually for this first trip to Mayaland, believing that it would be extraordinary and, hopefully, a healing for the whole world through the Unity Consciousness Grid.

My Traveling Companion

At this point, I received a call from my nephew, Ken Page, who wanted to come on the journey.

Ken's is another long story, but he had just begun his awakening into the Light. He had somehow found out about this journey, and strongly felt that he was supposed to be there. I asked Thoth, who said that, yes, this was the way it was supposed to happen. So I called Ken back and told him to get ready.

At that time, Ken really knew almost nothing about spirituality and psychic energy. Until the experiences that awakened him, he had been mostly focused on making money, something he did very well. But he came along, and I have to admit that it was fun watching him experience things that continually blew his mind. Our trip lasted about one month, and it was a time that would change Ken's life forever.

As you will see, Ken also made important contributions to helping me find out where the crystals were to be placed. As I said, Thoth gave us the locations for the first four temples, but for the last four, we were on our own. Again, I don't know why it was done this way, but I suspect that besides the primary purposes — to help the Mayans and to balance the Grid — the trip had a secondary purpose: to further the enlightenment process for both Ken and myself.

As we visit each of the original temples on our present-day journey, I will continue the story of my earlier journey. But for now, let us return to the Yucatàn in 2003.

The First Three Temples

Uxmal, Labna, and Kabah are located west of Merida. They are very close together because they are in the beginning of the spiral, so we would visit them all on the same day. This was true on both journeys.

It was also true on both journeys that the order was changed at the last moment. Instead of visiting the temples from the center of the spiral outward, in a 1-2-3 order, on the first trip we went from Uxmal to Kabah to Labna (1-3-2), and on the second trip we went from Labna to Kabah to Uxmal (2-3-1). I'm not sure why this was, but that's the way it happened.

On the first trip it was Thoth who told me to change the order, and I just did as he said, although I never understood why. On the second trip, LionFire had arranged it this way — and, again, it just seemed right. But I still don't understand why.

So although the order of the first trip was different, I will tell you about each site in the order we visited them in 2003.

Labna

at LabnaWe arrived at Labna for our first ceremony. Everyone was still beginning to know each other, and this ceremony was as much to bring our energy together as it was to fulfill our duty to the Mayans.

For many on the trip, this was their first view of an ancient Mayan site. So we explored for a bit. But we had much to do on this day. So after a short time, I gathered the group together, sat down on a low, ancient wall, and related to everyone the story I have just told you above, about Thoth, the crystals, Ken, and our journey of 1985.

Labna, 1985: Here, Ken and I were greeted by a young, beautiful couple who seemed very happy to see us and opened the whole place for us to explore. The stone for this temple was carnelian, and when I placed it on the ground, it seemed to disappear. It was the same precise color as the red earth of this site. We already knew the approximate location to place this crystal, and we found the precise spot easily, thus finishing the first day of our mission — as I indicated earlier, we had already been to Kabah and Uxmal. As we drove back to Merida, Ken and I had decided that this was going to be easy. We had already finished three sites, with only five to go. We had a lot to learn!

After telling to the present-day group the story of my earlier journey, I selected a location in a grassy plot next to one of the temple buildings, and we formed a circle, holding hands.

And now, just within the first fifteen minutes of our ceremony, it became evident to me that this was an unusually powerful group. You could feel it in the energy of our hands. Some of the Mayans I talked with believed that this particular circle of people had been chosen long ago, and that in our hearts we all knew this from the beginning.

The four directions were established, and as Diane Cooper circled the outside of the group with her drum, I began to pray to Mother Earth, offering tobacco and cornmeal in each direction. Another person was burning sage and cedar for purification.

Labna is the sexual center, and I found it interesting that we would begin with this one, but we soon realized that this was meant to be. We did begin to physically connect with each other during this ceremony, but we also discovered that one of our group needed help clearing a being or beings that were within her, entities who were trying to bring the dark side of the sexual energy into our circle. In time, this would have to be attended to — for ourselves, and for the purpose of our journey. At the moment, however, we simply noticed it and held the energy.

Our prayers took on a life of their own as we spoke of healing the Inner and Outer Worlds of the Maya.

Kabah

storytime at KabahAs we were journeying toward Kabah, a far more impressive site (although I personally prefer Labna), our Mexican guide, Roberto, an extremely educated man with a degree in archeology, gave me a piece of information that I found truly remarkable but, on retrospect, not surprising. It turns out that the original Mayan name for this site was not Kabah but Kabahla! The Mayans themselves say that they came from Atlantis. In my first book, The Ancient Secret of the Flower of Life, Volume I, I speak about how the Jews and the Atlantean priests lived in the same country. So it's no wonder that the Mayans (who were, in fact, the Atlantean priests) would use the name Kabahla.

Kabah, 1985: It was raining as we went to Kabah, and we were greeted by two grumpy old men who looked like they had just been in an argument. We quickly found the spot using my normal pendulum, buried the crystal, and left. Being the ego center, it didn't feel all that great.

At Kabah, we performed the ceremony of the circle and the square. We literally stood in a circle around a raised, square platform made of stone. This "squaring of the circle" is the beginning of Life in sacred geometry. The instructions were coming from within me, from a place that at first seemed remote. Slowly, this inner source of information became clearer and clearer. The ceremonial "pot" was starting to churn.

Uxmal

Finally, we found ourselves at the impressive Uxmal site where we were to perform one last ceremony at a giant pyramid nearly hidden at the back of the site. It's called the Great Pyramid.

Uxmal, 1985: Just before our journey, Ken had acquired an enormous piece of black obsidian, at least eight inches long. He believed that this crystal was to be used as a pendulum, and only at Uxmal: the temple at the starting-point of the spiral. Thoth had told us that the place we must bury the crystal here was "the size of an atom," and had said that we must be very precise in establishing the placement of the crystal at the exact source of the spiral.

As it turned out, obsidian also was the crystal Katrina had selected for the Great Pyramid at Uxmal. And again, just as the carnelian matched the color of the earth at Kabah, the mortar between the stones at the Great Pyramid appeared to be mixed with obsidian. In fact, at every single temple that we visited, the color of the crystal exactly matched the color and energy of the site.

Ken and I knew that the crystal was to be placed at the north side of the Great Pyramid at Uxmal, but now we had to find the exact spot. So Ken pulled out his obsidian crystal and tied a thin, three-foot rope to one end to make the largest pendulum I had ever seen. Most of us have used or seen small pendulums with a short chain or cord tied to one end, but this one was huge.

There was an area of plain grass in front of the temple's north face. Ken began to walk back and forth there, swinging his pendulum and waiting for a sign. But he had never used a pendulum before. After about fifteen or twenty minutes, he stopped and asked me, "Drunvalo, how do I know when I find the spot?"

I had no idea! Normally, you would watch the spin of the pendulum. From the direction and spin, you can tell where an energy spot exists. But this pendulum was too big for that. So I just suggested that he watch for something unusual, and he continued for a while longer, just walking back and forth.

Then something amazing happened. The pendulum, which had been in a two-and-a-half-foot swing, abruptly came to a total stop over a point in the grass. Ken tried to pull it up, and the harder he tried, the more strongly the stone was pulling toward the Earth — until, with a dramatic snap, the rope broke and the pendulum buried itself in the grass and dirt with such force that it penetrated the ground about two inches!

Ken looked at me like a kid who has just broken a toy. "Did I do something wrong?"

Trying not to laugh, I said, "No, Ken. I believe you have just found the spot."

We removed the pendulum from the earth to find a perfect, cone-shaped hole just the right size for burying the obsidian crystal — which we did. And I could see that the spot was geometrically located with respect to the temple and surrounding buildings. Besides being in the exact center of the face of the Great Pyramid, it made a perfect, ninety-degree cross with the building on the left. I realized this would make the spot very easy to locate in the future.

Ten years later, in 1995, I went back there with Hunbatz Men to perform more ceremony at Uxmal and was amazed to see that a tree had grown over the exact location where we had buried that crystal. It was as though Mother Earth decided to seal the place off, so that no one could find and remove the crystal. It made my heart happy.

the treeUpon arriving at Uxmal, our group gathered around while I told them the story of Ken's giant pendulum and the amazing happenings of 1985. Then we all walked to the Great Pyramid, where we saw that the tree sealing in the obsidian crystal was still there, and much bigger around that it had been in 1995. It was the only tree in that grassy area, and one could see how it was perfectly aligned with the center of the pyramid and edge of the building next to it.

We made our way to the top of the Great Pyramid — a steep climb and a dizzying height for some of our group who had never done anything like this before. From the top, you could see the entire, immense area of Uxmal, its pyramids and temples spread out over miles in the jungle. At one time this site was a great center for the Mayan people.

Our ceremony here took on an unusual shape: the geometry of the Vessica Piscis. You have to picture us, a group of sixty people on top of a pyramid, attempting to arrange our bodies in the form of two overlapping circles! But we achieved the end result, and the final ceremony of the day unfolded.

By the end of this ceremony, I realized that we were beginning to connect with the Ancient Ones. I felt them there watching us, testing us. And in response, the hearts of the people in our group kept opening wider — just what was needed for us to be accepted both by the Mayans on the surface and the Mayans in the Inner Worlds.

Our weary but elated departure from Uxmal was attended by splendor. All over the Yucatàn, the Mayans were burning their fields in preparation for planting their spring crops, and the slight haze this made in the air caused the setting sun to go down in an unusually brilliant blaze of glory.

And as we all responded to the beauty of this place and our experiences, I knew that Great Spirit had brought the right people together for this work. It couldn't have been better if it had been planned...

Merida

We all went to bed early that night, because we had to arise at 4 a.m.! This was in order to be present by sunrise at the ancient site of Dzibilchaltun, where the Equinoctial sun rises each year in the keyhole of a temple of a civilization that dates back to 500 BC — perhaps older than anything else we were to visit in the Yucatàn.

After that, we would return to our hotel at Merida, pack, visit the magical and life-changing Caves of Blancanche, and then make our way to Chichen Itza for the Equinox ceremony the next day.

Meeting with Hunbatz Men

Before I tell you about Dzibilchaltun, where we went to participate in the ancient rite of the Spring Equinox, I need to relate a conversation I'd had with Hunbatz Men at breakfast the day before.

As Hunbatz drank his coffee and I sipped my tea, we both went over our schedules to synchronize our movements for the coming events. Since we were going to perform ceremony together at Chichen Itza — the Heart Center — we needed to determine exactly how we would place our energies relative to the Incan, Mayan, and other indigenous elders who were coming from all over the Americas to participate. Also, Carolina Hehenkamp's group would be going with Hunbatz when we parted at Chichen Itza, and we both wanted to know where each other would be during the coming days.

After that conversation, Hunbatz changed the subject. He wanted to tell me about the future, and especially, the importance of the crystal skulls to future ceremonies. He talked about how these skulls were alive, and how they would soon all come together in our ceremonies as we approached the End of Time.

Interestingly, the Native American Council had recently sent a crystal skull to my home in Arizona, for me to keep for an undetermined period of time. But the crystal skulls had not been part of my understanding of what this Yucatàn journey was about. So I listened to Hunbatz, but considered that the subject of the skulls was really for another time.

Little did I know.

Dzibilchaltun

I had seen this Equinox ceremony in 1995 with Hunbatz, but I was feeling happy to be with this wonderful group to experience it again.

We arrived at the site — which has been a major Initiation Center for the Mystery Schools of the world — about 20 minutes before sunrise. Many others had come to celebrate the Equinox in this way, most of them Mayans.

The sunrise temple is a stone edifice with an opening where the Equinoctial sun appears each year. The land that leads to the temple is a long, rocky corridor, almost like a landing strip, with low brush on either side. The temple sits way at the end of this corridor.

LionFire also had been there before, and he helped our group to align themselves at a distance from the temple so that they would be able to see the sun appear in its opening.

Then, about two minutes before the sun was about to rise, a moment occurred to me that I will never forget. It was a moment that changed something within me.

An elderly Mexican couple, people that I had met before, came near to me and said, "Drunvalo, is that you?"

I turned to talk to them, knowing that I had only a little time before the sun would rise.

The lady, Maria, was carrying a piece of white cloth wrapped around some fairly large object. She opened the cloth to show me what was inside. There, nestled between her hands, was a fantastically beautiful, lucent white, ancient Mayan crystal skull. She looked at me and said, "Please, hold this to your heart."

I placed the skull over my heartI placed the crystal skull over my heart. And the sun began to rise. And as the sun entered the opening in the temple and the first rays of light began to explode from within, I saw two human Mayan spirits within that crystal skull. They were male and female, they were still alive, and they were together in sexual union, in eternal love for one another.

At that moment, in a flash of understanding, I knew for certain what the Maya were doing with these crystal skulls.

In solemn ceremony, they would consciously die, and at the moment of death enter the crystal skull. They would then live there, holding the knowledge and experience of the ancient Mayan people, so that in this time — in the End of Time — it would be remembered. Their purpose was being fulfilled now, at this moment. The skulls were all coming together because that was their purpose in the beginning.

As this realization flooded into me, I saw an old grandmother sitting quietly in the background of the crystal skull. I knew then that she was the one who had arranged this eternal marriage with the two lovers. That she had planned everything that this crystal skull was to do for her people. And that it was the ancient grandmothers who had devised this method of transmitting information across the millennia and who were still guarding the skulls.

The knowledge and experience that the Mayan lovers held was from the period of time when the Mayan culture was first blossoming. It was from the time when love and compassion were the rulers of all that was Mayan. And it was this extraordinary love, compassion, and knowledge that was planned to be reignited in the modern-day Mayan heart.

The experience of the sun rising through the temple and the crystal skull and its spiritual lovers opened my heart in a way I would never have believed if it had not happened. Dramatically, the ancient Mayans were beginning to speak to me about what was important to them.

I listened, and I prayed. I knew then that this was going to be another journey of the heart that would change me forever.

But I had no idea that another experience of equal intensity lay only a few hours in my future. A place so powerful, so deeply heart centered, that after simply being there, no one in our entire group would ever be the same.

In Love and Service,

Drunvalo
