Our history
Back in 1994, our president and CEO, Cengiz Akinli, had a vision. His vision was to start a web hosting company built on family values, fair prices, and personal service. This vision has carried us to where we are today, positioned as a growing, stable company renowned for its service and support.
Of course, in 1994, things were simpler. The internet was new technology, and people were just realizing its potential for commerce, communication, and research. Cengiz decided to get in on the ground floor. He borrowed some money from his family, purchased a few Sun SPARC machines, a 28.8 modem, and founded Netmar, “Home of the Tarheel Mall”. Netmar officially incorporated on October 14th, 1994.
The Tarheel Mall, through offering web hosting at prices actually within people’s reach, became very popular. Shortly after opening for business, Netmar upgraded to a T-1, quite an upgrade from our 28.8 modem. Dedicated servers were also added as an option for clients who wanted complete control of their sites and system. Soon the total server count at Netmar was approaching 15.
Netmar quickly invested in a larger office, two contractor-grade generators, several security features, and some additional servers. Not content to only offer hosting on the Tarheel Mall, Netmar started offering web hosting for anyone. Custom software development and webpage design were added to our resume, and our customer base was expanding rapidly.
In 2001, Netmar moved its corporate office to Blacksburg, VA, where we reside today. Our servers are housed in a secure facility with multiple high speed internet links. Netmar continues to grow each year. By embracing cost-effective Intel-based x86 technology as well as the legendary reliability of Sun SPARC technology, Netmar has expanded our customer’s options while lowering the cost of web hosting. In 2002, Netmar was awarded a Certificate of Excellence from the Better Business Bureau for the exemplary record of “No Customer Complaints for the three year period” ending January 15th 2002.
Netmar, as far as we know, is the oldest web hosting company still in business under the original ownership and management. Our reputation is backed by our staying power in this industry, and as we approach a decade of quality web services, we are growing faster than ever, and there’s never been a better time to host your business or personal site online with Netmar!
