Notylia barkeri

Dear Orchid Friends:

Notylia barkeri, c2005 David W. Dodge

The distinguishing characteristic of this orchid is its unusual and large flower spike. Notylia barkeri is another orchid with pendant flowers. Notylia barkeri is an unusual flower - hundreds of minute yellow and green flowers form its "chain" of flowers. Petal and sepals are delicate, small and slender. Petals and sepals are distinct and separated. The lip is somewhat triangular in shape and on a stalk. It is best to view these flowers with your glasses on! The flower spike can reach up to 8 inches in length (15 cm). Notylia barkeri flowers several times a year given the ideal conditions.

The best method for growing Notylia is to hang them in wooden baskets or pot them in small pots of sphagnum. Notylia barkeri has a pseudobulb with thick leathery leaves. These are small to medium sized plants. These orchids hail from Mexico and prefer warmer climates.

A delightful species…. It is time to try my luck with this beauty!

Until next time,

Vivi Vivian Dodge, owner of Vivi's Orchids
