Miltassias - Miltassia Shelob 'Red Spider'Dear Orchid Friends: Intergeneric hybrids such as Miltassias are actually crosses of two genus types: Brassias x Miltonias = Miltassias. Such crosses are the easiest method to create hybrids. The Brassias (Spider orchids) have the distinct spider shape with many wonderful flowers on an inflorescence. Brassias tend to be intermediate to warm environment growers. There are two kinds of Miltonias: cool growing, pansy type orchids; and warm varieties which hail from Brazil and resemble odontoglossums with their distinct, separate petals and sepals. Miltonias have a flared lip. Crossing these two genus types does make for an interesting orchid and the effects create the warm and intermediate Miltassias which are suitable for South Florida climates. Miltassias have smooth, thin pseudobulbs and thin leafed foliage. These orchids do not store water well, so adequate watering is necessary. Avoid letting these orchids dry out. Miltassias tend to like an even moist medium. Miltassias like high light, but less so than cattleyas. Since the leaves are thin, they sunburn easily. Take care to monitor them amount of direct sunlight they receive. Miltassia Shelob 'Red Spider' is a delightful orchid. This particular variety blooms late spring and early summer. This is a large (4 inch) spider. Petals and sepals resemble the Brazilian Miltassias: long and tapered. Petals and sepals are deep burgundy with green markings. The lip is 1 ½ - 2 inches in length, with an elongated, flared skirt on the lip. The lip is a pale burgundy color with green edged borders. Each of the deep burgundy markings on the flower is enclosed by light green rings. As the flower matures, the deep burgundy color turns to a lovely chocolate brown. Flowers are of good substance. Each inflorescence bears approximately 6 individual flowers and flowers are long lasting. Roots are fine and dry out easily. Miltassia Shelob 'Red Spider' likes water and to be kept evenly moist. They are thirstier than you think (especially in South Florida). Use a medium that is not too course and one that retains moisture. Take caution to monitor your sunlight. The intense Florida summer sun is too hot… the thin leaves are more delicate than you think. Do give them morning or late afternoon sun. The plant is full (approximately 1 foot in height) and medium sized. Miltassia - this is a noble hybrid. The eye-catching flowers are a magnificent treat for early summer. The Miltassia Shelob 'Red Spider' is the perfect start to summer: exotic and stimulating! Until next time, |
