Vivi's Orchid CornerFebruary 2006 - Volume 11, Issue 2![]() Paphiopedilum micranthum Paphiopedilum micranthumDear Orchid Friends: Affectionately known as "slipper orchids", this particular paphiopedilum has a large and showy lip. Paphiopedilums are terrestrial orchids…loving moist medium and lower light. Paphiopedilum micranthum is native to China. Paphiopedilum micranthum boasts an enormous pouch...its distinguishing characteristic. Flowers have an overall pinkish hue. The dorsal sepal (uppermost sepal) and lateral sepals are more rounded with dark magenta veining. The balloon-like lip is white to pale pink. The yellow tinges on the sepal make for vibrant color combinations. This orchid generally blooms late spring to summer. Eye catching orchid flower! Leaves of this species are mottled and prefer more intermediate temperatures. Paphiopedilum micranthum, while more tolerant of warmer temperatures, does like a shadier environment. A little sunshine is beneficial; however, take care to keep them out of hot, direct sunlight. Watering and the correct medium are important in the growth and culture of Paphiopedilum micranthum. Since these orchids are terrestrial, they prefer a more evenly moist environment. Take care not let these orchids become too dry between watering. Otherwise, the roots dry out too quickly and the plant will definitely show a decline in its health: yellowing, browning of leaves, desiccated plant and flowers. Careful watering techniques are essential. Avoid filling over collection of water in the lip as this can lead to bacterial rot. This species is sensitive to salt buildup, so water well to flush toxins through thoroughly. Paphiopedilum micranthum is better suited in smaller posts. Use a well draining medium, but one that does retain moisture. These orchids do not have water storing pseudobulbs, thus necessitating the moist medium. Paphiopedilum micranthum appears as if when in flower it is top heavy. Stake the flowers securely to enjoy the true beauty of the flower. Paphiopedilum micranthum is considered moderate to difficult to grow. This orchid will certainly get your attention! Until next time, |
