Vivi's Orchid CornerMarch 2006 - Volume 11, Issue 3![]() Vivi examines Epidendrum radicans in a Costa Rican Rain Forest Epidendrum radicansDear Orchid Friends: When one thinks of Epidendrums, generally what comes to mind are reed stem or cane-like plants. Epidendrum radicans is a slender plant; resembling more of a vine, without pseudobulbs. The plant has slender, upright stems and grows to a sizeable length (nearly 2 ft.). This orchid may require supports for its vining qualities. Leaves are elliptical and more widely spread apart on the stems than other Epidendrums. This orchid branches freely and has long aerial roots. Grow these orchids in partial sun. As a rule, Epidendrum radicans adapt to various growing conditions and mediums. This orchid produces keikis or lateral shoots from the main stem and these growths can be rooted for new plants. Epidendrum radicans is considered easy to grow in South Florida climates.
Epidendrum radicans has a sunny, happy appearance. It's a great plant to liven up your orchid collection and puts the winter doldrums far behind you. Until next time, |
