Vivi's Orchid CornerApril 2006 - Volume 11, Issue 4![]() Lycaste skinneri 'Pink Dawn' Lycaste skinneri 'Pink Dawn'Dear Orchid Friends: Lycaste skinneri 'Pink Dawn'….oh such a delicate beauty. An orchid flower reminiscent of spring colors (even if it blooms winter to spring!). Many Lycastes have a distinguishing trait; they are deciduous, which means the plant will drop its leaves. Lycaste skinneri, however, retain their leaves. Lycastes have large pseudobulbs and large pleated leaves. Lycaste skinneri is the national flower of Guatemala. Lycaste skinneri (the species) has a large waxy flower with just a faint tinge of pale pink. These long lasting flowers have a triangular shape. Lycaste skinneri 'Pink Dawn', a hybrid, has creamy white flowers and soft delicate tinges of pink. The callus has delicate pink markings/ striations and a deep golden yellow center. This is a lusciously fragrant orchid. Lycastes require a dry period - (Lycaste skinneri requirements are less severe). During active growth periods (summer), water well and freely. Do let the medium dry out between watering. In autumn, begin to reduce the amount of water when pseudobulbs have formed and continue to water less in late autumn/ winter months. This dry period is crucial to the overall health and flowering of the orchid. Choose a medium that allows excellent drainage. Lycastes generally prefer 50-70 percent shade. Lycaste skinneri 'Pink Dawn' is a lovely hybrid and truly shows the wonderful Lycaste qualities. Until next time, |
