An Appreciation of Orchids

Dear Orchid Friends:

The winter and spring months signal an abundance of fantastic orchid shows throughout the nation. This is a time when a majority of orchids are in bloom. Orchid shows are the ideal setting to view some of the most spectacular orchids and familiarize yourself with various genera of orchids.

An appreciation of orchids is similar to an appreciation of art. Time and exposure promotes a greater understanding of particular crosses, flower characteristics, colors. As one learns to decipher brush strokes, techniques and styles of artists, so it is with orchids. Certain parentage produces particular characteristics that are highly desirable. These characteristics that are carried over into the different crosses add value to the plants. Perhaps it is the flower composition, the markings or stippling of petals, the fragrance or its propensity to flower that makes a particular cross so much more valuable. These qualities are specific characteristics you will learn to appreciate. The specific qualities of a parent plant are evident in the crosses of their offspring. One learns to appreciate the value (price) of a plant (even if it is a small plant) because of the parentage and understanding what a particular orchid will continually produce.

Orchid colors are vivid: pink, white, orange, purple, magenta, green. As an artist creates color on her palette, orchids display their artsy colors in their flowers. 'Art shade' orchidsThe past few years have been popular for "art shades". These crosses have produced rich, interesting flower colors...they are striking! Most orchid shows now have special categories in which to judge the "art shade orchids". Orchids produce daring colors and orchid shows represent some of the best. Where else can you admire brilliant opposing colors on flowers and all of them are more beautiful than the next. Mother nature creates beautiful and cosmic artwork (and some growers perfected them!)

George and Myrna with awarded plantOne never tires of orchid beauty. The first step into an orchid show is spectacular and breathtaking year after year! I love orchid shows. People are friendly and readily impart knowledge and information.

Visit area orchid shows and take time to observe the awarded plants. Winners always have the judges' comments displayed. These are wonderful pointers to help us better understand why a certain orchid plant is deemed valuable.

The New Year symbolizes many things to each of us. Orchid "art" appreciation is a worthy goal. Stimulation for the senses and intellect are worthy accomplishments. Do your senses a favor and visit an orchid show. For more info on orchid events, check out my events & info section.

Enjoy! Until next time,

Vivi
