Spring 1999: The 16th World Orchid Conference

Dear Orchid Friends:
April is nearly here and the 16th World Orchid Conference
(April 28 to May 2, 1999) is quickly approaching. Vancouver, British Columbia, is the host city for this 16th WOC. Host organizations include the Vancouver Orchid Society, The Canadian Orchid Congress Societies and the Orchid Species Preservation Foundation of Alberta. The World Orchid Conference is a spectacular international event, held once every three years. Orchid growers from around the world participate and exhibit their finest orchids. Vivi's Orchids will be traveling to the 16th WOC and I will share memorable photos, information, and my experiences with you.

This year's theme is "Conservation and Environment", a worthy topic for today, focusing on the preservation of orchids and ecological awareness worldwide. The conference will be held at the Vancouver Trade and Convention Centre. The 16th WOC will undoubtedly highlight cool and intermediate growing orchids - those orchids of the Pacific Northwest and Northern America. One can look forward to viewing the best of Odontoglossums, Pleurothallids, Cypripediums, Masdevalias, Miltonias. Varieties of orchids inhabiting the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia will most certainly be showcased.

Vancouver is a port city, a natural harbor, surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, the majestic Coast Mountains and the Fraser River. Vancouver offers a temperate climate and an interesting array of topographies, gorgeous vistas. The temperate climate, frequent rains and the cool mists provide for a rich , lush landscape and an ideal location for those cool growing orchids.
