SILVER BELLS
Dear Orchid Friends:
While most of us start ringing our silver bells for the Holiday Season, the Delray
Beach Orchid Society is one step ahead. Silver bells mean a Silver Anniversary 1999 orchid show.
Congratulations to Delray Beach Orchid Society for 25 years!
Interesting species...that's what I like about this show. Table top exhibits allow those few
choice species to be displayed and admired. Catasetums, bulbophyllum,
brassavolas and paphiopedilums certainly flavor the show's exhibits.
This AOS judged show was held October 29-31, 1999, at the Old School Square Gymnasium. The small and intimate show
continues its reputation of a quality event. The "old Florida" charm is enhanced by the the
dark cedar beams and the second floor loft of the gymnasium. The loft housed the table
top exhibits and gave one a perfect vantage point to view the vendor tables. Be certain to
use a flash for pictures since the gym is a tad dark. Thirteen vendors
participated in this year's jubilee.
Special mention goes to Delray Beach Orchid Society for their 25th Anniversary
display capturing the festive celebration with champagne and momentos from the past
twenty five years.
- JEM Orchids won first place for their table top display of catasetums,
paphiopedilums and interesting species in fall colors. They were also awarded
Best Paphiopedilum Alliance for Paph. Rattlesnake Skin: a slipper
orchid with spots on long twisted petals.
- Best Species Flower was given for Bulb. echinopabium: a deep velvety
magenta flower and lip with a coral column.
- Opel Orchids also won first place for a lovely display of brassias and
cattleyas.
- Alberts and Merkel Orchids were awarded Best Mule Ear
Oncidium for their orange and yellow Psychop. Butterfly.
- Congrats to Orchid Acres for receiving the AOS Award of Merit (AM) for
Rhyn. coelestis x Ascda. Tubtim Velvet: upright, waxy white inflorescences
with a blush of lavender on petals and a deep purple lip.
Individual hobbyists also enter orchids for judging and here a just a few:
Blue Ribbons:
- BC. Maikai 'Mayumi' HCC/AOS by Helen and Leon Mebsel
- Colm. Wildcat 'Bobcat' AM/AOS by Sue Bacheller. This also won Best in
Show.
- Ascda. Udomchai x Aer. lawrenciae
Congratulations again to Delray Beach orchid Society on their Silver Jubilee. It
was a fine show and a perfect way to toast the start of the Orchid Season.
Best wishes for the next 25 years!
Happy Holidays to Everyone!
Until next time,
Vivi
