"Orchids in Paradise"
Dear Orchid Friends:
Paradise is whatever we imagine, dream, expect. The Ft. Lauderdale Orchid Society
aptly named this year's show "Orchids in Paradise." The show was held January 21-23, 2000
and was its 42nd year. Twenty-six vendors participated in the show displaying orchids and
artistic talents. Kudos to all exhibitors!
First Place Exhibits:
- RF Orchids:"Paradise Cove" A tropical island with coastal mountain backdrops.
The focus was on vandaceous orchids ( no wonder!).
- RF Orchids was also awarded:
- Best Vanda: V. Mem. Louise Fuchs FCC; a pinkish/red shade
- Best Yellow or Green Cattleya: Blc. Clinton x Blc. Steve Stevenson; green
petals with a white lip.
- Krull-Smith Orchids took first place for their display "A Walk in
the Clouds".
Second Place Exhibits:
- Orchid Acres: 'Serenity", a wrought iron trellis graced a peaceful garden
setting. Red and orange orchids blended to purples and pinks. Angraecums were
showcased and
- Orchid Acres was awarded Best Vandaceous Orchid for Angraecum
sesquipedale AM/AOS; a huge plant with 8 inflorescence on 7-8 flowers on each stem.
- Adkins Orchids: "Backyard Bliss", another garden display, nicely done!
- Orchids by Allison: an exhibit of lovely cattleyas, Brassidiums.
Third Place Exhibits:
Impact Orchids: "Just Another Day in Paradise", an inviting bamboo armchair
surrounded by Dendrobiums, Colmanarasand Encyclias. Imagine a
gardener taking respite with champagne. Impact Orchids was awarded Best
Specimen and Best Dendrobium for Den. lineale, a plant with multiple white
flowers.
- Redland Orchids: :"Monet's Garden", think watercolors! They were honored
with Best Red Cattleya: Blc. Orglade Royal Lady, AM/AOS: a deep velvety red
flower, dark red lip.
Also:
- Soroa Orchids deserves mention for a black and silver zen-like display. It
definitely was a clever use of computer discs to identify the plants. Originality is so
refreshing...and they have it!
- Carib Orchids was awarded Best
Epidendrum: Epi. elongatum var. type F. Best Broughtonia: Bro.
negrilensis and
Best Ascocentrum-Ascocenda: Ascda. Su-Fun Beauty
"Orange Belle" AM/AOS.
- Quest Orchids had a small. interesting oasis of African
orchids in their display. One was Trich. sagarikii, a waxy green flower
with maroon stripes, and a white nectary...quite interesting! Another orchid was
Propetalum Mathina 'Elizabeth', a yellow flower with maroon spots.
Art shade phalaenopsis, rhyncostylis, vandas were the highlights of most displays.
Angraecums and paphiopedilums were more abundant as well. The War Memorial
Auditorium, although a more friendly setting, does lack adequate lighting. The beauty of
the flowers are lost in the dark. Someone had the foresight to strategically place a few
chairs throughout the show auditorium offering a place to rest and still enjoy the show.
Individual hobbyists are an important component of orchid shows. So, in keeping with the
spirit of lauding individuals, I want to announce some of the winners:
Blue Ribbons:
- Blc. Delta King: a large yellow cattleya by Peter Van Scholly
- C. Marjorie Hauserman x C. intermedia "Kurt": a white flower with a hint of blush and a
magenta lip by Larry Lohkamp
- Dgmra. Flying High 'Stars N Bars' HCC/AOS: brown , yellow and cream colored flower
by Ken and Dottie Kone
- Paraphal. Kimmy: cinnamon flower with yellow edges and a striped lip by Ellen Rumble

- Bl. Yellow Bird by Mickey's Orchids
- Intdm. Pupukra Sunset x Milt. marscewiczii by Dot Henley

Year after year, the Ft. Lauderdale Orchid Society Show is a most enjoyable event.
Friendly people, helpful and informative vendors, and beautiful orchids are the essence of
this show. Congrats on another successful show. I'll be there next year!
Until next time,
Vivi
