"Dendrobium phalaenopsis"Dear Orchid Friends:Articles on Dendrobiums abound. However, this month I will focus on the species Dendrobium phalaenopsis. Dendrobium phalaenopsis (Den-phals) are especially good orchids to have since they are relatively easy to grow and are quite adaptable to various conditions. Flowers are full, flat and vibrant. The genus Dendrobium is considerably large with over 1,000 species identified, thus encompassing diverse cultural requirements and can be quite challenging to master and induce flowering. Many species of Dendrobiums are difficult to flower. Generally, Dendrobiums tolerate high light, need good air circulation and most require a resting period, but these characteristics do vary depending on the species. The genus Dendrobium and subsequent species are divided into six (6) basic groups based on similar growing habits, preferences or conditions. Den-phals are categorized into the Phalaenanthe Group (group 6). Den-phals are one type of species in this group. Orchids in this group may be either evergreen or deciduous depending on growing conditions. The Phalaenanthe group contains such species as: Dendrobium affine, Dendrobium bigibbum, Dendrobium superbein, Dendrobium williamsianum. Den-phals are so named because they share some similarities with Phalaenopsis: flowers, light requirements. Flowers: Flowers are more round and flattened having overlapping petals. Look closely and notice the striking similarity to the shape of Phalaenopsis flowers. Flowers are borne on spikes in parallel rows. A wide color spectrum is characteristic of these flowers: vibrant hues of magenta, purple, white and other interesting mixtures. Flowers are rather long lasting and arise from both old and new growths. Light: Den-phals can tolerate conditions more suited to Phalaenopsis (more shade) as well as high light as with Cattleyas. If grown with phals, expect at least two flowerings per year. Flowers will be more abundant, more frequent and the plant will be sturdier if given more light. They adapt to their environment. This is a distinctive quality of Den-phals which makes them popular with orchid hobbyists. Temperatures: Den-phals like intermediate to warm environments. These orchids easily adapt to cool nights (60-65F) and warm weather year round. Some growers tout the necessity of incorporating cool cycles, especially in winter. Watering: When in active growth and when inflorescences are forming, water normally. Soak the pot and medium then allow it to dry out between waterings (much like Cattleyas or other Dendrobiums). Restricted watering is tolerated during cool cycles or when growths are well on their way to solid development. In summer, plants may require more water due to hot, humid conditions. Giving the plant more water with less drier periods will more likely keep them evergreen. Many growers believe in giving these plants a resting period with little water and cooler temperatures, especially during the winter months. If sticking to a cool/dry regime, the plant may turn deciduous. These orchids do tolerate a dormant period and adapt accordingly. I have success when keeping the plant on the dry side year round and give them plenty of light. Many are in full sun for several hours during the day. Den-phals like to be relatively pot bound. Of course, look at your plants to determine the watering schedule based on how they look and the other orchids you have in your collection as well as your environment. Ensure that whatever medium is used provides for good drainage and air circulation. A balanced fertilizer suits these orchids. Don’t overwater or overnurture these orchids! Dendrobium-phalaenopsis are wonderful additions to your collection since they adapt so readily to various environments and still produce flowers. If you grow lots of phals, you can grow Den-phals with them. This species is frequently used in hybridization due to their striking flowers and ability to conform to different conditions. Dendrobium phalaenopsis truly thrive with minimal care…another reason for their popularity. Novices will have great luck with this species. An ideal orchid for nearly any environment. Until next time, |
