"Laelia purpurata coerulea"Dear Orchid Friends: Laelia purpurata coerulea is a Brazilian species that typically blooms Spring to Summer. Brazil is in the southern Hemisphere, so their Spring starts during September.. which is opposite of our fall. Interestingly, my Laelia purpuratas remained on the Brazilian cycle for several years. During the past few years, they have somewhat acclimated to our growing cycle. Now, I typically find them blooming in our late Winter to late Spring months. This species, Laelia purpurata coerulea, is known for its bluish tinge. Most of the purpuratas generally have magenta to rose colored petals. Blue is a much more uncommon coloration in orchids. The term coerulea means sky blue, however, with orchid coloration it refers to hues of sky blue to iris-blue to a bluish-purple tinge. This Brazilian species is highly sought after and is found near the coast of Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul. Petals are white and may have a faint blue tinge. The petals are elliptical and are wider and longer than the sepals. The blue lip is bell shaped and flared with a bluish/purplish throat. Flowers are borne on a spike bearing 3-4 flowers at a time. Flower spikes emerge from the pseudobulbs. Flowers are approximately 15-20 cm across. These beautiful flowers are not fragrant. Laelias are relatives of the Cattleyas. Grow with Cattleyas. They need fairly bright light, high humidity and good ventilation. They grow well in an intermediate to warm environment. Thoroughly water to drench the medium and plant. Water so the water runs out of the pot. They like a brief drying out period between waterings. If the leaves and pseudobulbs become wrinkled and withered, it is an indication the plants needs more water. Keep out of the midday sun to prevent burning. Too much sun will cause the leaves to turn a yellowish color. Do note that the pseudobulbs do have deep folds. The larger and older the plant, the more pronounced the folds become. The Laelia purpurata coerulea is generally a taller plant and can grow up to 16- 18 cm in height. They tend to grow upright versus other cattleyas that fill out over the pot. Laelia purpuratas are hardy orchids. The Laelia purpurata coerulea is difficult to find. So, you may wish to consider adding any of the other Laelia purpuratas to your collection. All of the Laelia purpuratas will delight you! Until next time, |
