"Lycastes"Dear Orchid Friends: The Lycastes genus is classified in the subtribe Lycastinae. These orchids are native to south and Central America as well as the West Indies. Generally, when one thinks of Lycastes, one thinks of orchids that favor cooler growing environments in higher elevations. There are some species, however, that do well in the tropical Amazons and rainforests of Costa Rica. Lycastes grow both as terrestrial orchids in the humid rainforests or in cool mountainous climates dependent upon the species. The higher elevation orchids like cooler temperatures in the 50-60°F range. An interesting characteristic of Lycastes is that many species are deciduous - which mean they shed their leaves (much like Oak or Maple trees). There are species that retain their leaves, which classifies them as "evergreen" varieties. Some of the deciduous species can tolerate 70-80°F days. Most varieties prefer cooler nights or a dip in temperatures from day to night time temperatures. The deciduous varieties tolerate and require more sunlight. Lycastes prefer dappled sun when growing and semi shade during other times of the year. Some growers say they do well in cattleya conditions and diffuse bright light. Lycastes have ovoid or oblong pseudobulbs that bear long pleated, papery leaves. The pseudobulbs act as a storage unit for water. When plants are in active growth they do require more water. Lycastes are another group of orchids that prefer to be drier in the winter months and require this winter "dry season". During the winter, water only enough to prevent pseudobulbs from shriveling. For those of us who are heavy handed with water, it is difficult to abstain from watering.
Species include: Lycaste aromatica, Lycaste cruenta (both of these species grow in South Florida), Lycaste macrophylla, skinnerii, dowiana, cochleata. Grow these orchids on bark or pot in a fine to medium bark mixture to ensure good drainage. Until next time, |
