A February Care Primer
Dear Orchid Friends:
February is an important month - it is the month prior to the spring blooms. Appropriate treatment is critical to ensure your orchids are in the best of health to promote and sustain their spring inflorescences.
| F |
Feed regularly, consistently and appropriately. Fertilize sparingly during winter
months. As February progresses, use a bloom booster to promote those spring buds.
|
| E |
Examine your orchids for any signs of disease or infestation. Scales and white flies are common. Treat accordingly. |
| B |
Botrylis virus can lead to flower spotting, so ensure adequate ventilation and air movement. Use clean utensils! |
| R |
Roots dry out quickly in cold weather and dry heat. Keep plants away from direct heat vents. The dryness can lead to dehydration. |
| U |
Use stakes on emerging inflorescences. Proper staking will promote better flower formation. |
| A |
Adequate moisture is critical. Attend to watering and humidity needs. |
| R |
Remove sheaths gently from cattleyas and pseudobulbs. Cuts, nicks and bruising can cause tissue damage lending itself to the entry of viruses via the cut. |
| Y |
Yellowing of leaves may occur with temperature extremes. Ensure your orchids are adequately protected from the cold. |
Hopefully you will find these tips beneficial and helpful to you.
P.S. My March 2004 article will be slightly delayed so that a review of the Miami Orchid Show may occur. The show will be held March 5-6, 2004.
Until next time,
