Masdevallia igneaDear Orchid Friends:
I am drawn to Masdevallias at orchid shows. Their unique 3 point shape (triangular) is captivating. My fascination with these orchids is due to not being able to grow these in south Florida. Masdevallias are cool-growing orchids. This month's article is about Masdevallia ignea. This species is native to Colombia and lives in the cool mountains. This species is a cloud forest orchid, thriving on cool, constant moisture. They prefer higher elevations, 6000 to 12000 ft.Masdevallia ignea is a small plant. This species (as with other Masdevallias) do not have pseudobulbs. The leaves sprout from small rhizomes. Because they have very little capacity to store water, they require considerable amounts of water. In a rainforest, the plant is always wet. Grow this orchid in a small pot and use sphagnum or a similar medium. Do not let these orchids dry out. These orchids are susceptible to a fungus which causes leaf rot. Masdevallia ignea is difficult to grow. They prefer low light conditions.
I applaud those of you who have mastered the growing techniques of these magnificent orchids. It is an interesting beauty - look for it at your next orchid show. Until next time, |
